On March 2, 2022, the government of the Republic of North Macedonia decided to provide temporary protection for humanitarian reasons to citizens of Ukraine. He revealed the issues regarding his stay in North Macedonia during the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Let’s consider the main points.

Who is covered by temporary protection?

For citizens of Ukraine and their family members who:

A) enter the territory of North Macedonia due to war, threat to life, escalation of hostilities against the civilian population;

B) are in the territory of North Macedonia and cannot return to the territory of Ukraine due to the war, threat to life, escalation of hostilities against the civilian population.

What documents are required to cross the border?

North Macedonia is not a member state of the EU, but at the same time it has simplified the requirements for entering its territory for citizens of Ukraine as much as possible. Yes, you can cross the border without a foreign passport. Only national documents that can be used to establish identity will be needed – a passport of a citizen of Ukraine or a birth certificate.

If you are crossing the border with a minor, you should have documents confirming your family or other relationship with him (child’s birth certificate, parental consent to accompany and leave the child).

Obtaining temporary protection.

In order to obtain temporary protection in North Macedonia, you need to apply to the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Sector for Work with Foreigners (Sector for Foreigners) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Skopje (address: Gotse Delchev Street, 9, MTV building, 9th floor, office 927), or to an inspector for work with foreigners at police stations in other cities to issue a temporary residence permit for humanitarian reasons.

For what period is temporary protection granted?

Temporary protection is provided for at least 1 year.

In case of registration of refugee status, the period of stay in the country is set to 3 years. At the same time, we recommend that you apply for temporary protection, as this procedure is simpler and allows you to return to Ukraine at any time without hindrance.

Housing.

After arriving in North Macedonia, one of the first questions that will arise is finding accommodation. Of course, you can organize this process yourself, or stay with friends or relatives.

If you have nowhere to live, we recommend contacting the head of the community of Ukrainians in the Republic of North Macedonia (Facebook page), or the cell Red Cross by location.

Medical care.

After receiving a residence permit for humanitarian reasons, you will be entitled to state medical care.

Contacts of state medical institutions.

Employment.

A certificate for humanitarian reasons gives the right to employment without obtaining a special permit.

To search for a job and receive more detailed information, we recommend contacting the Employment Service of the Republic of North Macedonia

In addition, you can use the largest job search websites in North Macedonia for independent job search:

B) Kariera MK;

B) Vrabotuvanje.

Education.

As of today, the government of the Republic of North Macedonia has not yet provided official clarifications regarding the organization of the educational process for persons benefiting from temporary protection.

At the same time, if necessary, we recommend that you independently contact the relevant educational institutions at your place of stay for additional information.
